Sad that the “men” of Australia relinquished their God-given right to protect themselves and their families from people with evil intent (whether the base, criminal types or the ones wearing suits in high places). Too bad there hadn't been some armed “men” at Port Arthur ready, willing, and able to protect themselves and those innocent victims from the shooters. All they are now are slaves to an all-powerful and fully armed government.Gun laws are much the same across all states and territories of Australia.
No handguns, except for police and some security, cash in transit van officers for example.
No more auto and semi auto assault rifles/rifles, no more pump action shotguns.
Bolt action rifles only.
×
Auto/semi auto rifles were banned by the federal govt at the urging of the majority of the People.
The Port Arthur Massacre / slaughter of diners at the Broad Arrow Cafe, including two little girls who ran from the cafe but who were chased and murdered...was the final straw...the horror too much for the minds of the public to bear.
Prime Minister John Howard stood tall, announced a ban, and govt buyback of existing weapons, including an amnesty.
Guns for self defence?
mmm, I see "six guns at 10 paces" outside pubs at closing time, and murders everywhere by angry people who now have to use fists.

Nah.
Nothing is perfect...but the men of Australia decided that removing auto, semi auto, and pump action rifles/shotguns from society was their safest option for being able to live their best family lives.
Men arming themselves to fight the govt man?
Fantasy methinks.
Handguns were already banned.
Disarm everyone, make anyone wanting to own a gun apply thru the police, submitting an application for consideration...and if approved paying a substantial annual licence fee, installing an approved gun safe, and submitting to regular inspections.
Live in city suburbia, you might be battling to be granted a gun licence.
Possess guns without a licence...big trouble for you if you get caught.
Most guns are on farms, or in possession of rural townsfolk who use them on farms (farms are often thousands of acres) for vermin control/hunting.
This assumes that a person will never be a danger to any other person and we all know this is falseNah.

"Men" don't seek safety. MEN are interested in danger and risk, and they're especially interested in protecting their families from those dangers and risks. Real men know that danger exists in the world and that if an evil person means you harm, they'll use a knife or a rock or a club if they can't use a gun.Nah.

The Port Arthur Massacre was the final straw.
Before that was The Strathfield Massacre in a shopping mall (assault rifle), The Hoddle St Massacre (assault rifle),...too many massacres...bye bye assault rifles.. bye bye massacres.
There are still shooting deaths with rogue auto/semi auto weapons...but they are very rare...well except in SW Sydney, where crime families are gunning down each other in suburbia in broad daylight
Exactly and who cares what Australians or any other foreigner thinks of the USWho cares what Australia thinks, We are not Australia
Who cares what Australia thinks, We are not Australia

That's a brain dead American fallacy. Harvard debunked that myth, as well as the Violence Policy Centre -Sad that the “men” of Australia relinquished their God-given right to protect themselves and their families from people with evil intent (whether the base, criminal types or the ones wearing suits in high places).
