It is true that extreme nationalism is not good but NO extreme -ism is good. Nationalism, capitalism, socialism - all bad when taken to far. Hell, democracy is bad when taken to far which is why we have a constitution to constrain our government.
Nationalism is simply the unifying notion that we all belong to the same thing that is larger than ourselves, the nation we are a part of. That unifying notion takes a disparate group of people and gives them something to unify behind and control our inherent tribalism. Diversity is only a strength when there is something to take that diverse group and give them enough common cause to work in consort rather than against each other.
