Surely with USA having a space force military and Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos repeatedly doing all these small trips in outer space, surely the US government has its sights set on being the first country to do astro mining.

No, it hasnt happened yet. The entire world tracks rockets leaving Earth and they track objects in space. They would know if something left Earth headed for an asteroid. You also have to think about how far away these larger asteroids are. Anything worth mining would have to be so big that it would kill Earth if it ever hit, so we definitely dont have many rocks like that floating around nearby, thank god.

First some nation has to master the technology it takes to get men through The Van Allen belt again?

Those believing that the Secret Space Force has been running for 40+ years probably believe this .

I have trouble believing it because the transport overheads are impossible to justify unless they have found something totally new and need it for a new propulsion system . But not even a whisper of claimed "proof" for that .

Far too may "ifs" in this subject area and in resulting lines of speculation , with no support evidence I have run across .


Doubt that the Van Allen belt poses a problem now thanks to advances in shielding technologies . But imho
