before FDR sold us out at Yalta in Feb 1945. Sept 1944 Germany was ripe for the taking but we ended up placating Montgomery with his ill fated Market Garden operation.
The war could have also ended earlier if Stauffenberg.s Plot had been successful
That was really bad luck.Count Von Stauffenberg's plot was more organized than the other attempts, if that brief case had not been moved it would killed Hitler and the war would ended in late July or August.
Also there was second bomb Stauffenberg had. He did not have time to arm it, but if he put the explosive in with the bomb he armed both would have went off killing everyone in the room.Count Von Stauffenberg's plot was more organized than the other attempts, if that brief case had not been moved it would killed Hitler and the war would ended in late July or August.
No it was incompetence, all it needed was a German officer with the balls to just put a pistol to Hitlers head and pull the trigger.Question … was it God.s will that all those plans to kill Hitler failed?
I have studied Market Garden for a long time, the concept was good but the detail was lacking, as you say the one main highway where the Guards Armoured were to spearhead advance was crazy, the drop and L zones were several miles away and there were the two SS divisions in the Arnhem area, the Dutch underground had warned London about their presence but were just ignored and dismissed, i have visited many times over the years and spoken with many veterans, being on the ground gave me a real perspective on what i had only read about in BooksMarket Garden was a farce beginning to end. Moving men and equipment down a one lane road was the height of stupidity. Eisenhower had to placate Monty.
By the fall of 1944, the U.S. had become the dominate power within the Allied Armies. Monty at one time the knight in shinning British Army after North Africa. But when he was NOT appointed to the Supreme Commander of Allied forces he had snit. He went bitching to Churchill.
Monty came up a very fucked plan called "Market Garden", calling it a "Dagger knife thrust in Germany". Omar Bradly called a butter knife cutting froze butter.
Landing Zones miles from the objective. Maps were captured early on by the German Army and knew exactly where the Allies would be.
From beginning to end Market Garden was doomed to fail. Monty should have been sacked after it failed, but Eisenhower couldn't do it without pissing off the Brits. Monty's need for the limelight was more important than men's lives.
The book, "A Bridge To Far" by Cornelius Ryan, is about Market Garden and its failures. It was at one time required reading at West Point. All those men died because of Monty's ego. What a waste.
