This was George Galloway at the Oxford Union debate would you fight for King and Country? he was on form Ben Wallace who was the Defence secretary at the time should have taken part but was no show so he sent his underling Toby Ellwood.

Just because I hated Ronald Reagan and his policies in Central America doesn't mean I couldn't follow orders ... I did ... and you can see today the failure of the policies I helped implement there ...

A Patriot fights for his country even if he knows his country is wrong ... not fighting is Amish ... and we don't want to be Amish here now do we? ...

We don't have kings here is the US. Every many and woman is a king or a queen.

And yes, I'd fight for them if I had to. I didn't store up all this ammunition for nothing.

We have a lot of Amish here. I'll test your theory by making a pass at an Amish guy's wife next time I get a chance, and let you know what happened.

For the Right and Good King and His Kingdom.....with ALL that is within me.

Huh? You Brits go on an American message board and ask if we’d fight for a king? We don’t have kings.

What does that have to do with their refusal to fight for their country ... as a matter of religious doctrine ...

Better ... ask them if they're practice pacifism ... opposition to war and military ... or make a pass at an Amish Goodwife if that gets your rocks off ...

That is stupid and the mentality that led to Auschwitz.

The phrase, ‘fight for King and Country’ is an outdated jingoistic example of the kind of propaganda speak used to stoke the fire of patriotism and the will to fight. Whilst it was undoubtedly right to use it as a rallying call for the first and second world wars it has now become redundant since the wars we have been involved in since the Falklands have not been about protecting our country, but have been implemented on the policies and lies of the men in grey suits. Those who stand to gain the most, like politicians and the arms industry.

I had a longish career in the British armed forces and I can tell you that very few of us ever considered that we were fighting for King…or in my case…Queen and country. We fight when we’re ordered to fight. It’s what the job entails! Most of all, when in combat we fight for each other.

So, in answer to your question, yes, I would fight for my country (not the effing King!) but only if it was under direct threat from a foreign power. I think the people of Britain have wised up and you’ll never see many volunteering for political wars in far away countries. No one wants to fight or die to fulfil the ambitions of politicians.

Very good post, and i hope people ARE waking up, we should fight if our Country is under threat like my late father and his Brother did in WW2 they both volunteered because as young as they were they probably saw the real threat of the Nazis, one of my Uncles was killed in Normandy 12 days after landing on Gold Beach on D-Day aged only 17 which was a ridicupous age, another Uncle was captured after the battle of Leros Greece but tat war was worth fighting, only other war since i would have supported with reservations was the Falklands, i also have cousins who served in the British army in the seventies, most of their time in the army was spent in Belfast Londonderry and South armargh that was a different sort of war, these days our politicians with few exceptions are criminals who i wouldn't follow anywhere never mind war, i think Galloway was spot on.

I think our forefathers who fought in the great wars would be turning in their graves if they knew what our country has now become and how it is run by self-serving politicians whose lust for power and greed for money is a priority over serving the electorate and protecting the people.

Was it always that way? i have books about the first world war i have been given over the years because of my interest in WW2 history but could never read one for long, the full horror was a crime, in my Town in Lancashire 16% of the men aged 16 to 49 never came back from the front out of 60 thousand shocking numbers, my Grandad was wounded by a shell blast in his leg when i was a kid i used to go to his house and many days he was in pain it was ulcerated sometimes, they didn't have the medical knowledge then, Grandad on Mums side was shot fighting the Turks but recovered he also had malaria, i never knew him he died aged 38, that war all looked like an argument between the Royals of Europe, anyway i digress.

King and country, the bullshit notion that gets young men slaughtered for the gain of the aristocracy.
