My wife and I both have computers that we got in 2019. They were not cheap. I keep hearing that they will not be compatible with Windows 11 after Oct 14. Also for some reason my in private browsing stopped working a few days ago. Any suggestions?

leave it all alone

continue on

You can continue to use your Windows 10 system for a LONG time. Depending on your use of the PC, secure it with BitDefender or some other anti-malware / anti virus software that is continually updated.

Mostly what you got from Microsoft was security updates. My PC won't update to Win 11 but it is really all I need. It's a Ryzen system that is fast enough to do all I need to do at a good clip. I'm not ready to clunk down 2-3K to get a modern equivalent updated machine.

I think MS is making a mistake. Ultra wealthy folks have no concept that the average person out here may be struggling with rising costs across the board and spending a few grand on a new PC just to use Win 11 isn't an option for many of them.

I think this could be a turning point where Linux goes mainstream finally. We'll see.

A lot of my old programs will not run on windows 11.
The only thing that can use Windows 11 for is the internet.

I have Webroot and am very happy with it. Should that protect me?

I've been dealing with new computers over the past couple years as well. What a pain. I just want a laptop that has resident programs and accesses the internet for info, social media and email. I don't want ANY web-based programs. I purchased a copy of ms office many years ago that has served me well, but with the advent of all this 'cloud-based' storage and apps, disc drives have disappeared so even if they continued to support my resident programs, I wouldn't be able to install them easily. I am about ready to toss the whole thing. Tech mfrs. are just doing their best to confuse the public and separate them from their money.

I have used Norton and McAfee and they both are using deceptive practices. The offers I responded to years ago and have maintained were "all-in-one" comprehensive suites for optimization and security. Somewhere along the line, both of these outfits have split off the optimization piece and they want to sell that option to you for ANOTHER $40 after you purchased the security package. The tech industry has turned into just another pack of thieves.

About a year ago the fan in my wife's computer got really noisey. She ordered a replacement on the web. I went to a computer store because I did not have tools and drivers to fit the screws on the back of the computer. I bought this cheap kit. The guy in the store told me not to fix it myself because it is made for only experts to work on. I went on the web and got instructions. I got everything apart with special tools and I did not have to solder anything. I just had to keep track of what I was taking apart and the order I would have to reassemble it. I put the back on and fired it up. It worked like new.

Yeah, these store guys are trying to promote job security. "Experts" are all over You Tube for those willing to research---but you have to be careful which of these You Tube guys you listen to---some of them are way out there, but they are usually pretty easy to spot.

If you have the right BIOS, you can use the software to emulate the TPM that
Winders 11 wants you to have. But if your BIOS is not the right type, you can purchase a TPM module to put on your mainboard. Cost is like 15 bucks or something.

But Windows 11 is still malware.

I opened my laptop this morning and it had done an update through the night. It was doing it's thing saying 25% etc.. to go and keep your laptop on. Then waiting and more waiting, the the screen comes up and fecking so on. Cut a long story short, exactly 59 minutes later, I've opened the spreadsheet I was after.

Is a Core 17 8th gen classed as slow these days, or is it just shit windows?

Edit : After an internet search, yup, Core 17 8th gen is pretty outdated to be running shit Windows.
