This Iranian hardliner had something nice to say about Donald Trump
Why would an Iranian hardliner praise Donald J. Trump? Was it over his criticisms of NATO? Or his determination to spend more money at home rather than abroad? Or maybe it’s his staunch opposition to recent American interventions in the Middle East. These Iranians will do anything to undermine our national toughness, by gum!
Actually, it was over this:
“The wisest plan of crazy [Donald] Trump is tearing up the nuclear deal,” Hossein Shariatmadari, editor of the hard-line Kayhan newspaper, told Fars News Agency when asked about the Republican front-runner’s opposition to the nuclear deal. Shariatmadari called the nuclear deal a “golden document” for the United States but insisted that for Iran it has caused nothing but “damages, humiliation and deception.”
In fairness, Ted Cruz is even more determined to tear up the Iran deal—”to shreds,” he promises—than Trump. The billionaire businessman has offered plenty of vituperation for the president’s agreement, but he’s also stopped short of calling for it to be fed into a wood chipper on day one (this actually makes him sort of a moderate on the issue, as far as GOP opinion goes). Instead, Trump says he would merely “double and triple up the sanctions,” which, if he’s referring to the now-canceled nuclear sanctions, would effectively end the deal anyways.
