White Teacher Under Fire For Singing 'Monkey' Song On Black Boy's Birthday

A white teacher in Florida is under fire after she sang a "monkey" birthday song to a six-year-old Black boy at school.

In a video shared on TikTok, the boy's classmates and teacher first sang the traditional "Happy Birthday" song to celebrate the occasion. The teacher then delivered what the boy's mother believes was a racially charged version of the birthday song.

"Happy birthday to you. You live in the zoo. You look like a monkey, and you smell like one too," the teacher recited, leaving several children visibly uncomfortable and confused.

The mother of the boy, identified as six-year-old Legend, called the teacher's song a racial insult.

“I’m sharing this so people understand what my son experienced in his classroom. A birthday should be celebrated with kindness, not racial jokes from an adult in a position of authority," the mother said.

Let's see how many of the right wingers make excuses for this.

What a disgrace.
I'm white ..and when I was a kid we would sing that version to the other white kids .. especially the boys .. the teacher was attempting to be funny .. she failed ..

The thing is, it could be used racially, or it could just be used as a fun song.

Which is it? The context of the situation might tell us that
from the video it looks like it was used in a funny situation .. you can tell by the teachers tone that she really likes the child and was trying to make him laugh ..

Of course it doesn't.

But, it today's world, not a good idea.
I’m getting the hang of this stuff.

In a world where they can maintain that “math is racist,” anything can be deemed racially offensive.

This is one of the many reasons I see “pc” as babbling bullshit.

(I once had a boss who was on the small size. That was sort of a taboo topic. A pal informed me that henceforth he would be termed “vertically challenged.” I think this kind of thing is very funny. And whining about it makes the whiners seem even more ridiculous. And, yes, I am talking about the OP.)

Fine....we all have opinions.

However, I know what happens when you throw a match into a half filled gas can.

About the same thing that happens when you do something like this.

If you don't mind the aggravation, go for it.

What a disgrace.

If I identify as Chinese I can't be racist right

I'm Jewish, and was always getting this stuff. I grew up in Bay Ridge and Borough Park Brooklyn, New York. Borough Park is a Jewish enclave. Right before my 12th birthday, we moved to Sunset Park, a relatively Hispanic enclave.

A lot of Brooklyn neighborhoods are relatively mixed, with many neighborhoods having dominant demographic. So, I played with Hispanic kids, but also white and black kids.

I'll never forget my 12th birthday. We were playing basketball and then hung out on the handball court. Everyone in my mixed friend group decided to sing me this happy birthday song:

Happy birthday to you
You look like a Jew
From your skin and your nose
All the way to your toes

We all had a good laugh, including me. My friend's dad caught wind of this, and told me that I shouldn't take it. He said I should punch all of them. He even said I should take boxing lessons because that is what Jewish kids have to do.

My friend's dad was really mad, but it was me who had to tell him not to let pre-teens get inside his head. Yeah, I was a mere 12 and I was telling him not to get mad.

The funny thing is that I got into boxing around 17 for a different reason.

Did he look like he liked it? You're laughing because most racist think it is funny.
What if the teacher did not mean what the accusation is? How long are we all going to be walking on eggshells? We are sensitized to everything anymore. At some point we have to distinguish what is harassment and/or hate. Unfortunately, the word monkey makes most people self-conscious.
