We do stupid things too, like giving control of the Panama Canal back to Panama. Now China pretty much controls the canal.

Giving it back was not the stupid part, that was the right thing to do.

The reason he killed around 10% of the planet population at that time is because he thought he was chasing Space Aliens that had become part of the population fabric .
