Actually, they stopped when the inmates took over the asylum at the GOP, and guys like Packwood and Smith wouldn't get past the primary stage.

Packwood resigned because he couldn't keep his hands to himself.

Gordon Smith got voted out because he kept supporting the War in Iraq.
