It seems to me that there are two main definitions of “Doctor”.

More generally, it's a certain level of formal education. Anyone with a PhD or equivalent academic degree is a doctor.

It also is a title used by various forms of physicians, but the connection between that and the academic use of the title seems rather thin. The higher levels of physicians hold degrees that are at least comparable to a PhD, though there are some lesser forms of physicians whose credentials are less than comparable to a PhD, such as a nurse-practitioner.

Then there are some Medical specialties that are more a trade (albeit one requiring high intelligence and skill) like surgery.

All M.D's hold a doctorate in medicine, but unlike other Ph'D's they don't do a thesis or a dissertation, their post-doc work is as an intern and a resident, practical experience, again more like a trade than an academic pursuit.

The term doctor is thrown around way too much.

Technically some are. Like condoleeza rice had a phd in political science but referred to herself as Dr rice. Or jill Biden insisting people call her Dr Biden.

Even my chiropractor calls himself dr which is laughable. But I keep it to myself because he doesn't charge much and is always nice to me and my headaches all but disappeared since I started seeing him.

In the professional world only doctors in the medical field are referred to as doctor. Everyone with just a PhD in something only refer to themselves as Dr in a professional setting among colleagues. The ones that don't just want to add esteem or self importance to themselves, or it's a marketing thing like Dr phil who has a degree in clinical psychology but isn't a psychiatrist which has a medical degree attached to it which allows them to make a diagnosis or write prescriptions.

can you prove that?....

It's a figure of speech.

There is a reason why your post count vs reaction score is what it is.

The only ones I have respect for are veterinarians. They do it all. The rest are quackinbergers who refer you to specialist. Fuckin cardiologistein can't even do heart surgery. A vet can. GP Harry Freckez can't set a bone. Specialist. Noop. Can't pull a damn wisdom tooth either...or deal with an ingrown toenail...or a skin rash. More specialists.
The AMA is a division of Barnum and Bailey.Get jab #7 NOW. Take 12 Tylenol and call me never. My stocks are falling. I'll be at the golf course

and there is a reason why you think that matters....we have had 3 different forums since i have been here all with different methods of "scoring"....my post counts began with the first one...there was no reaction score with the last two...now you know....
