We are living in a world of expanding technology, and I cannot deny that. It seems strange to think that just a few generations ago a telephone was a luxury. Even electricity was rare in homes just a hundred years ago. I recall going to my grandparents’ home in the early 1950s because they had a television. We had a radio then but that was it.
Philo Farnsworth, a farm boy from Beaver Utah, had a vision of how light waves travel and figured out a way to capture those waves and transmit moving images on that radio. The world never looked back. That television could have been a massively effective teaching tool, but as most of us know, we got “I love Lucy” instead.
Later today, a great television event will take place, we call Superbowl. Millions of eyes will be on that event and advertisers will have a field day with low IQ visual productions designed to entertain and separate viewers from their money and even persuade them to adopt political opinions. I guess this could be argued as an example of human science and a report card for the success of the current occupants of the planet. Based on the way the world is going what does that report card show us about how we use technology?
Today people are benefitting from technology to make their lives easier and more comfortable, and they are entertained to the degree that they may not be aware of reality that has not gone away. Beer, chicken wings, and pizza will be the reality of today. Will our technology save us from the reality that does not guarantee our continued existence?
I am not too optimistic about that.
