Probably the last thing the U.S. or the NATO allies should do is to intervene, unless there is some clear evidence of Russia committing atrocities. Over centuries Ukraine and Russia have been more or less cousins, sharing czars in the old times and Soviet chairmen in later times.

Crimea in particular is a unique region in that it historically was legitimately Russian. The blood of Russians was shed to wrest it from the Turks and later to defend it against the English and the French and in WWII, the Germans. It was an accident of administrative logic that Nikita Kruschev deeded it to the Ukraine at a time when the Ukraine was a component of the U.S.S.R.

This conflict will straighten itself out best without outside interference.
