To me, if a prison sentence is not in the cards, he should be ordered to pay back the money that went into the search that was put together when he first went missing. As for his family members who thought that he was dead, if him being dead is what he truly wanted them to think, I would wash my hands of him completely if I was one of the family members that he did his running from.
