The change in policy for grading seems to reflect efforts by the school board to provide the weakest students with every opportunity to succeed , even though they likely understand that little in the way of success or failure will change .

The very last statements indicate the changes " Academic grades will now focus on mastery of the material, not a yearly average, which board members say penalizes students who get a slow start, or who struggle at points throughout the year. "

Gradual learning lends itself to depth of understanding , however it is not disingenuous to suppose that a student might dedicate themselves or receive insight to accomplish a sufficient level of mastery in area of study .

It is most likely out of the realm of likelihood that slower students are going to catch up while keeping up as curriculum is usually set at a reasonable but challenging pace for course material and time line .

Will measuring student learning at the end of the year , assuming via a comprehensive exam , supposedly reflect student " mastery of the material " to any marked degree of difference than by cumulative scores over the year ?

A more compelling challenge is how to evaluate " mastery of the material " as such a standard is most often based upon the whim of the instructor presenting the course .

Thus , by which standard is material mastery established and is the ultimate goal of the new policy to water down standards of learning by creating disingenuous means of student assessment ?

The following were given as justifications for the policy change that are definitely racially focused :
