We do not live in a total "free market" society. We have a high tax system in Federal, State and City governments. Social programs, public schools, etc are free and expensive in recent decades.

I can distill that even farther. There are people here and in other countries that believe that they can manage your life and the lives of all of us better than we are able to. They believe this and have the authority (whether or not it is legitimate-it makes no difference to us) and resources to impose this on us.
