Johnson & Johnson will pay $99 million to settle a lawsuit in West Virginia that alleges the company helped fuel the state’s opioid crisis, removing the company from a trial that began this month

How on earth is a drug manufacturer responsible for the opioid crisis? Did the settlement forget about the crooked doctors who prescribe the junk or the open borders that allow the drugs to enter the U.S.?

IIRC from previous stories, they were shipping trillions of drugs to a town with less than 2K people in it.

There were also private "clinics" in Florida where people could come from out of state, see a "doctor" for 5 minutes and leave with a prescription that could be filled at a convenient, on-site pharmacy. Then they could come back month after month to refill. I'm all about personal responsibility and ultimately, adults make their own choices in this life but when professionals make addictive drugs easy to acquire, then there should be some accountability for that. As for a 99 million dollar settlement, the counties will probably receive a pittance while the money is used in a state slush fund for other priorities.

Well closer to 3K but yeah.

Drug companies shipped nearly 21 million opioid painkillers to a town with 2,900 people

If you want to know how the opioid epidemic got so out of control, it’s hard to do better than this statistic: Between 2006 and 2016, out-of-state drug companies shipped nearly 21 million opioid painkillers to two pharmacies in Williamson, West Virginia, population 2,900.

Doctors and pharmacies have also been addressed.
