Would not catching it and releasing it safely outdoors, or perhaps just letting it go about its business, be the less pusillanimous things one might do?

That's what I'd probably do, or at least in earnest attempt to do. I sort of like spiders, mostly because they eat critters I truly don't like: mosquitos (actively seek me out to feed), moths (actively seek out my garments to feed) and flies (foul my food). As long as a spider don't make the mistake of getting caught descending on me or walking on me, or into my path, it's got a good chance of surviving its proximity to me -- walking on my nearby stuff and moving along with relative alacrity is okay.
