If a border tax is instituted it means the cost of goods in this country will go up. Period. That means the standard of living will go down, particularly for those who are trying to stretch their dollars as much as possible. IOW, the majority of people in this country. Period. Does that mean US companies will stop sending jobs overseas? Nope, not if they're selling the stuff over there that they're making over there. If they are making stuff over there and bringing it back here, will that practice be reduced or stopped? Yeah, probably. In some cases, that border tax means they'll just stop making those products altogether or they'll automate as much as possible. Maybe in some cases they'll move from a union state to a RTW state to save labor costs if it's feasible. Will America see more jobs as a result of a border tax? NO. Why? Cuz the number of jobs NOT sent out of the country will be offset by the number of jobs that are eliminated due to automation or a lack of profitability from those enterprises that can't make money if they pay that border tax. Period. It's like when the Dems say we'll get this much money from raising taxes on the rich using linear math; they do not consider the changes in behavior from the rich, who will simply move elsewhere to avoid the higher tax rates. And the Dems always end up with a lot less revenue than thy planned on. ALWAYS.
The border tax is a stupid idea, just like every other form or type of protectionism. Yeah, there might be a few winners that benefit, but there will also be a lot more losers, as in most of the rest of us who are trying to make ends meet. Period.
