Walking in the morning while being black.

Maybe according to what I am hearing about Oklahoma law

And we think he had no outstanding warrants

If so then the cop has a problem

But if he was a registered sex offender it would be a shame if the cops let him walk away with s child

Wow so now he’s a registered sex offender? Just guilty until proven innocent

So because you fear "dangerous criminals roaming the streets after dark", to hell with the 4th amendment, everyone else must go along with your bootlicking desires.
Not exactly

I want safe streets and I dont mind showing my ID to the police when they are just trying to do their job

3-4 am in a neighborhood not his own looks very suspicious

I dont want to wake up the next morning to find my house has been burglarized

Or even worse an Amber Alert for a missing child

Asking the man to show his identification was not an unreasonable request

And the man telling them no wasn’t illegal. The cops can ask whatever they like they just aren’t allowed to use force if they are told no and don’t like it.

Yup.

Cops aren't even allowed to detain or arrest without probable cause. Not required to give name or answer questions unless legally arrested and have a lawyer. No ID required to walk or ride bike.

Nothing wrong with Police questioning the guy. Would be nothing wrong with the guy saying “I don’t have ID. It’s at home. My name is X, my son Y is with me, we both live at Z”. Again, evasive people often have warrants. You can’t answer your name? DOB? Come on.

But, board experts researched OKLA law and found people don’t have to show ID. Why the Police would arrest him after that for not saying his name or DOB? According to board experts, that is a violation by the Police. OK. Board experts win.

Police could have handled it better, given him a little more time. Could have kept asking questions. Again, perhaps the Police were there for a reason. Perhaps the guy is known? I’ll wait on more facts.

But at this time it appears the board experts win in court. The Police violated his rights. The perp violated the rights of simple cooperation.

They detained him and he resisted

You are clinging to the letter of the law and I’m offering common sense

At 4am in a strange neighborhood the guy with no id may have been out for a walk

But it looked suspicious

You are in control of what YOU do.
Ok. Are the police not in control of what they do? Why is it incumbent on the citizen to make sure they don't trigger the police officer so that they violate the law and the citizen's rights?

I guess looking at it....I can see checking on the welfare of the kid. I'm referring to being a solo runner in my neighborhood.

A person's kind actions 99% of the time will cause others to respond more gently.

No ID? OK whats your name & DOB? Guy goes into rapid talk, “I don’t know”. I don’t have to tell you?

Are the Police just supposed to say…..OK have a nice walk.
Yes. The guy is either

1. Not under arrest/detained in which case he can just walk away and not answer any questions

2. He is under arrest/detained in which case he doesn't have to answer any questions.

What happened here is that 2 cops saw this guy, asked a few questions and when they didnt get the compliance/deference they thought they should get acted illegally.

1. Cops are people

2. People can be assholes

3. Cops are not immune to #2.

A LOT of innocent people would react the same. He was cordial with the cops until we all saw where this was going. People get defensive when cops start accusing them
I'm aways cooperative with police, however in this situation, especially with a young child with me, I think I would have gotten downright combative (verbally) with these idiot cops. I hope they get prosecuted.

Not totally disagreeing. A bit more time and a few more questions might have stopped the panicked defensiveness the guy quickly showed.

The Board experts may have won this one using OKLA law. The Cops had no legal reason to arrest based on the body cam at that time. The Police have a lot of experience dealing with stops.

There could still be more to this story.
