Because retail is exactly the same here. When you lose stock to theft, if means you have greater purchasing power from the supplier because you need greater stock orders to cover sales and theft. When you lock product away, sales will fall because many customers can't be bothered to find a member of staff with a key. So you can stand loses to a point where you have to lock it away, but if sales are overly impacted, it becomes unprofitable, shops then shut. Wages to employ more staff with keys outweigh the sales. Life doesn't work differently in the US despite Yank's narrow perception. Here's a hint, try looking beyond your borders and get your dumb thumb out of your ass.
