"The U.S. Navy has chosen its first Japanese-American to lead the Pacific Fleet, a spokesman said Thursday.

Adm. Harry Harris, a former assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, succeeded Adm. Cecil Haney on Wednesday as top commander of the Hawaii-based fleet.

Harris was born in the city of Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, to a Japanese woman and her American husband. He grew up in Tennessee and Florida. The U.S. Navy keeps its Japan headquarters in Yokosuka, home to the 7th Fleet.

Harris said at a ceremony Wednesday that he will “work closely with our allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region,” according to the fleet’s website."

What do you want to bet the CCP complains about this?

From operation Coronet to a Japanese-American admiral in Japan, and all in my lifetime.
One smart move.

Well except the Japanese do not like half Japanese. The whole society is xenophobic. According to Japanese law a mother can not pass on citizenship either. They haven't joined the 21st century yet.

Retired is wrong on all counts anyway.

Awesome - don't know the Admiral personally -

His Dad was a Chief Petty Officer - which means the Admiral was brought up with high Navy standards. Hell, he made four-star which is an awesome accomplishment! Especially for a P3 guy. The highest ranking P3 guy I worked for was Byron "Jake" Tobin - 2 star - GREAT AMERICAN. Both Naval Academy grads... all good. Best of luck to him. The JLs I am sure, are delighted he's in command!!

Yokosuka - great place!! Been there many, many times.

Anyone every catch the "Banana Show" there? That's what it's known for!!!!! :clap2:
Ah, the good old days.

Gunny - having lived there (as you probably have), I know the Japanese only "tolerate" blacks -- surely they can tolerate the Admiral.

That attitude is outdated. In fact, the opposite pole is by now outdated too.

Yeah, in the late 90s, through early 2000s black folks were downright trendy.
