Two weeks ago I ordered a new i-Phone (an obsolete model, if you must know, SE), and they didn't have one in stock, so they ordered it for me. It would be delivered in 5-7 days by UPS. I got the usual email notices, happy days.
But I had planned a road trip to Thunder Bay for last week, so UPS tried three times and gave up. I arrived home with three sticky notes attached to the front door, the last of which said more or less, we tried for the last time, and we're sending it back to the shipper. Seriously?
So I opened up the original order acknowledgement from Verizon, and it included a UPS tracking number (link), which I clicked.
It brings me to a page that tells me that I have to join their club in order to track down my package. I did this several years ago, so I had a record of my UPS user name and password, which I duly entered. Of course they tell me they don't remember the username or password, so I'm forced to register again under a different alias. I do it.
Still, there is no apparent way to go back to the page where I can enter the link and change my delivery instructions, so I log out and go back to the email from Verizon to click on the link again. When I go to the link that says "change delivery instructions," it tells me that I have to register to change my delivery instructions. It tells me this while I'm already logged in (automatically). Maybe my logic is off, but I don't understand how I can be logged in with a user name and password and have them tell me I need to create a new login account. Nor do I understand why it would be so difficult to get this done.
So I start trying to find a phone number. It's nowhere on the sticky notes, so I check the other communications, come up with nothing, and Google UPS near me. They tell me, rather cryptically that UPS is located in a strip mall North of here, "Advance Auto Parts"?????
So I go to the address and find the strip mall and see Advance Auto Parts, which luckily is open, but no sign anywhere mentioning UPS. So I sheepishly go into the auto parts store and approach the guy behind the counter.
"I know this is a stupid question, but why does UPS indicate that this is their street address?"
"Yeah, that's right. Sometimes when they can't deliver a package they will leave it with us and if someone comes to look for it, we give it to them." He seemed to have a dozen or so packages in the parts bin behind him. I give him my name, DGS49, and he doesn't have anything for me.
I still have not been able to get in touch with a human at UPS.
This is stupid, I know, but the only reason I wanted this new phone is because I wanted one with a single photo lens (rather than two or three), because I can use that with my monocular. I wanted to take it with me to Thunder Bay. Too late for that. So I really don't give a shit when I get the new cell phone. I think I'll just wait until either Verizon or UPS gets in touch with me, and take it from there.
I have always wondered the logic behind UPS' delivery policy. They try once, then try a second time, then try a third time and give up, but never try a phone call. Not my business, I guess.
