U.S. Approves Targeted Killing of American Cleric

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has taken the extraordinary step of authorizing the targeted killing of an American citizen, the radical Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who is believed to have shifted from encouraging attacks on the United States to directly participating in them, intelligence and counterterrorism officials said Tuesday.

...

It is extremely rare, if not unprecedented, for an American to be approved for targeted killing, officials said. A former senior legal official in the administration of George W. Bush said he did not know of any American who was approved for targeted killing under the former president.

Already discussed earlier...

My thoughts: All we need to do is revoke his citizenship based on the law...

Although a person's enlistment in the armed forces of a foreign country may not constitute a violation of U.S. law, it could subject him or her to Section 349(a)(3) of the Immigration and Nationality Act [8 U.S.C. 1481(a)(3)] which provides for loss of U.S. nationality if an American voluntarily and with the intention of relinquishing U.S. citizenship enters or serves in foreign armed forces engaged in hostilities against the United States or serves in the armed forces of any foreign country as a commissioned or non-commissioned officer.

Advice about Possible Loss of U.S. Citizenship and Foreign Military Service

This assumes that being a regional commander within al Qaeda is considered "serving in foreign armed forces engaged in hostilities against the United States".

And then they this was leaked to the press?

Does this administration have any concept that conducting illegal activities probably shouldnt be widely announced?

Eric Holder's working on an opinion that it's okay to Assassinate American Citizens as long as they are mirandized first.

Quoted from the same article in your OP:

As a general principle, international law permits the use of lethal force against individuals and groups that pose an imminent threat to a country, and officials said that was the standard used in adding names to the list of targets. In addition, Congress approved the use of military force against Al Qaeda after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. People on the target list are considered to be military enemies of the United States and therefore not subject to the ban on political assassination first approved by President Gerald R. Ford.

We are at war with al Qaeda, correct?

Therefore, we can kill them if they do not surrender.

apparently they don't believe it is illegal

look at the one lib in this thread, socksi, he is doign anything to defend the legality of this....i really dont' believe most liberals have a problem with this because obama said its ok....and that is all that matters to them

cons are cowards for wanting tribunals, but obama is brave for wanting to assassinate an american citizen on the belief he is now engaging in certain activities

why do you lie? i haven't actually given my opinion on this and if i did, it would have nothign to do with my opinion of obama....you on the other hand, are doing everything you can to defend it solely because of obama....when it was about the trials, you toed obama's party line, now, you're doing it again

We always target people with drones. If some citizens are involved and congressional oversight agrees that they need to go, thats all it takes. You're thinking like an ambulance chaser instead of protecting US citizens from terrorists. I applaud Obama for getting his priorities right. Now thats a Fatwa with teeth.
