Carlson Says Christian Hero Bonhoeffer Advocated Murder of Hitler
Tucker Carlson sparked backlash among conservatives and Christians after suggesting theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer believed Christianity “wasn’t enough” and endorsed killing Hitler.
As many know, Dietrick Bonhoeffer was a Christian leader and theologian in Germany during the rise of Hitler. It was he who sounded the alarms regarding the Nazi party who began taking over churches in Germany, to the point that about 60% of them had removed all evidence of any Jewish influence whatsoever, even though the entire Bible was written by Jews. In fact, some churches had removed the OT altogether. Many churches had even gone so far as to remove pictures of Jesus on their alters and replaced them with pictures of Hitler.
But it was not just the fact that Nazism was taking over Christianity in Nazi Germany, it was also the ongoing mass genocide and world wars that tormented Dietrick Bonhoffer as to what he should actually do about it. To that point, Dietrich had been a pacifist. It was the view that Christians must turn the other cheek regarding all circumstances. However, even though Christ demonstrated the concept of turning the other cheek, it is a theological giant leap to suggest that one should be a pacifist in all circumstances, especially when Jesus himself took up a whip to drive out the money changers in the temple. Interestingly enough, that event in the Bible was Hitler's most favorite passages in the Bible, as it showed how greedy Jews had corrupted the Temple as Jesus was ready to use violence and force to drive them out.
In fact, Hitler lamented that Germany found itself in a culture that was heavily influenced by Christianity. In Albert Speer's memoirs, he wrote that Hitler said, "‘It’s been our misfortune to have the wrong religion. Why did it have to be Christianity, with its meekness and flabbiness?” Islam was a Männerreligion—a “religion of men”—and hygienic too. The “soldiers of Islam” received a warrior’s heaven, “a real earthly paradise” with “houris” and “wine flowing.” This, Hitler argued, was much more suited to the “Germanic temperament” than the “Jewish filth and priestly twaddle” of Christianity.
Tucker then asked why Bonhoeffer had chosen to try and assassinate Hitler, assuming the theological stance that Christians should be pacifists by asking Dietrich, is Christianity not enough? Must you also kill?
Tucker Carlson has ignited a wave of outrage across the conservative and Christian worlds after claiming that Dietrich Bonhoeffer — the anti-Nazi theologian executed by Adolf Hitler's regime in 1945 — had "decided ... Christianity is not enough, we have to kill the guy [Hitler]," suggesting the German pastor ultimately advocated murder.
The remark came during Carlson's latest episode, which focused heavily on attacking commentators Mark Levin and Ben Shapiro and claiming they routinely label political opponents as "Nazis."
"Once you start calling people Nazis, we really have no choice but to start shooting them," Carlson said.
Tucker has a point here, but he is not the most astute of theologians. In fact, he is not a theologian at all. Tucker does not understand that Mosaic law does not prohibit killing, it only prohibits murder, which is a huge difference legally and theologically. But to Tucker's point, calling someone Hitler or a Nazi does give rise to an army of Bonhoeffer's to potentially rise up and try to do to them what Bonhoeffer tried to do to Hitler. So, those with power and influence, like those in politics in the media, have a greater burden of responsibility to not throw around such rhetoric, unless of course, those they are accused of being a Nazi are self-proclaimed Nazis like Nick Fuentes, a guest Trucker had on his show. But even then, unless they act as Nazi's, that is engaging in mass genocide and world wars around the globe, killing them would still be murder. However, once they engage in that behavior, it is no longer murder, it is merely self-defense.
My own personal opinion regarding Bonhoeffer is that he is an international hero, not just to the world, but to the church. Here is a man who felt compelled to come back to Germany, after escaping to the United States, because he was deeply convicted of doing nothing as a Christian as he watched the world burn across the pond. Instead, he came back to Germany to try and put an end to the madness as he wrestled with the morality of doing so, having come from a previous view of pacifism. How could Hitler and Nazism rise in a "Christian" nation like Germany? Ask Bonhoeffer, the hero who tried to fight it.
Tucker Carlson made the comment that for Bonhoeffer, Christianity was not enough, he instead had to try and kill Hitler. But the question must be asked, is Bonhoeffer not a Christian? If so, Christians are called to God's service to lay down their lives, if necessary, to make the world a better place. I have no doubt that had Hitler not acted in such a murderous and oppressive way, Bonhoeffer would never have acted in such a way as this. He would never have tried to kill Adolf Hitler, just my 2 cents. It is not like what we see today from the Left as they label Trump and any other political foe as Hitler or a Nazi, as assassins write "fascist" on their shell casings before pulling the trigger even though they have murdered on one. No, judging people before they act and without a trial and court system is not Christianity, and it should be condemned. Social justice has nothing to do with the court room of my personal thoughts and feelings, being judge, jury, and executioner. Just because they offend me does not mean I have the right to blow their heads off, for example, something we do see from the Left and Islamic fundamentalism.
Tucker missed the mark here in my opinion, as he is taking a lot of heat for what he has said, and rightly so. Righteous courage is all that separates us from the oppressive hell of tyranny.
