‘Yphtach Lelkes, an associate professor at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, said that framing cities as dangerous does more than raise concerns about crime; it signals that these places are morally and culturally different, even alien from small-town America.

“It tells rural and suburban voters that cities aren’t just far away, they’re run by people who don’t share their values,” said Lelkes, who co-directs the Polarization Research Lab, which looks at affective polarization, social trust, and political violence

“That perception fuels anger, disgust, and fear ― emotions that are powerful political motivators,” he said. “These feelings can mobilize voters, boost support for tough-on-crime or authoritarian policies, and create a strong sense of political urgency.”

When Trump lambasts Los Angeles or Detroit, he’s not speaking to the people in those cities who loathe him or even directly to his rural base (though all the better if the base is revved up). Those who live in cities are just as American as those who reside in more rural areas. The above is why conservative politicians lie about and vilify residents of cities.

Cities are not safe or moral places. They haven’t been in decades. The larger the city the worse the problems. It’s a simple equation.

Anyone who would willingly live in a large city is lacking common sense in my mind. Those who are stuck there and want out have my sympathy. Those who embrace the city life have my pity.

I generally go around with a 5-shot revolver and OC spray for self-defense. If I have to go into a city I carry a semi-auto pistol either at least one spare mag, a knife and the OC spray.

What's unwarranted is the fact that the cities have gotten this bad to need cleaning up! American cities have become a cesspool of crime and filth. Gee, I wonder whose fault that is?
