One day after launching strikes on Iran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and embroiled the region in war, President Trump told me this morning that the country’s new leadership wants to talk with him and that he plans to do so.
“They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk, so I will be talking to them. They should have done it sooner. They should have given what was very practical and easy to do sooner. They waited too long,” Trump told me in a phone call from his Mar-a-Lago club shortly before 9:30 a.m.
Asked whether his conversation with the Iranians would happen today or tomorrow, Trump responded, “I can’t tell you that.” He noted that some of the Iranians involved in negotiations in recent weeks were no longer alive. “Most of those people are gone. Some of the people we were dealing with are gone, because that was a big—that was a big hit,” he told me. “They should have done it sooner, Michael. They could have made a deal. They should’ve done it sooner. They played too cute.”"

What "leaders"?....All the would-be negotiators were targeted and killed again.

Intelligence agencies had warned that removing a single leader would not dismantle the system.

Instead, Iran’s leadership is consolidating.

Trump had reportedly anticipated a short conflict — a matter of days — believing that killing the Ayatollah would quickly force Tehran to the negotiating table.

There was even a quiet ceasefire proposal sent through intermediaries after the strike.

Iran rejected it.

You read that right. Trump apparently thought after killing Iran’s Supreme Leader, that they would eagerly take up his offer for a ceasefire.

Trump is now publicly suggesting Iran’s new leadership wants talks, but Iran’s foreign minister has indicated diplomacy may no longer be realistic after U.S. strikes derailed ongoing nuclear negotiations.

There are also reports that former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been killed in a strike.

The conflict is already expanding militarily, politically, and economically.

Officials are warning this operation could last weeks at minimum.

Lindsey Graham also made clear that the administration is operating without a defined post-war framework, arguing that it is not the president’s responsibility to shape what comes next inside Iran.

“Our goal is to make sure Iran cannot become again the largest state sponsor of terrorism,” Graham told NBC’s Kristen Welker.

“Does the the president have a plan to guarantee that happens?” Welker asked.

Graham responded, “No. It's not his job.”
