Maybe because assassinating heads of state is a bad habit to get into? Plus kill him and another hardliner would just take his place. There are no moderates or liberals in the ranks of the Imams who run Iran. Neither the USA nor Israel would gain anything from killing Khameini. Killing his effective henchmen does much more damage to Iran.

Killing or not killing Khameini won’t keep Iran from dragging us into this war. We are the greater satan and they see us as even more a enemy than Israel. If they can mount an attack, they will.

Carter is the sole reason Iran is the greatest sponsor of terrorism in history. If he hadn’t allowed Khomeini to hornswoggle him into thinking Khomeini was a holy man of peace, Carter wouldn’t have put the skids to the Shah who had the Muslims contained and powerless. Instead Carter handed a bunch of sixth century religious fanatics the second most modern and powerful military in the Middle East, and nearly unlimited oil money.

Carter was smart enough not to get us entangled in a Middle East war we could not win unlike George W. Bush.

All Carter had to was keep his nose out of Iranian business and none of the bad things in the Middle East since 1980 would have ever happened. No Hamas, no Black September, no Hezbollah, no PLA.

Carter could do nothing to stop the fall of the wildly unpopular Shah absent putting boots on the ground which he wisely decided not to do.

Wrong, Carter put pressure on the Shah to abdicate. Unpopular Middle Eastern leaders have survived far worse opposition than the Shah faced. The Shah was unpopular with the fundamentalist Muslims because he was attempting to pull Iran into the modern world. The Iranian middle class and upper class were much in favor of the Shah’s policies because they could see how they would improve the lives of all Iranians. The fundamentalists led by Khomeini were against modernization and after the the Shah abdicated, they forced Iran back into the dark ages by terror and absolutely savage secret police who were far worse than SAVAK ever was. The Mullahs killed more Iranians in the first six months of their rule than the shah did in the thirty six years of his rule.
