ā€˜Florida Republicans are fuming as the Trump administration proposes to open up new drilling in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. ā€œThe new maps released today by @SecretaryBurgum and @Interior outlining potential new offshore oil drilling sites in the Gulf of America are HIGHLY concerning—and we will be engaging directly with the department on this issue,ā€ wrote Sen. Ashley Moody (R-Fla.) in a post on the social platform X.

ā€œPreserving our state’s natural beauty is deeply important to the millions who call the Sunshine State home, our visitors, and those whose livelihoods depend on tourism,ā€ Moody wrote.

The office of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) also criticized the plan, noting that in 2020, President Trump blocked drilling off the state’s coasts. ā€œOur Administration supports the 2020 Presidential Memorandum and urges the Department of Interior to reconsider and to conform to the 2020 Trump Administration policy,ā€ Molly Best, a spokesperson for DeSantis, said in a statement to The Hill.

It’s a rare rift between the state’s Republicans and Trump, who made the state his primary residence in 2019. While his Mar-a-Lago resort is situated on the state’s east coast on the Atlantic Ocean, drilling in the eastern gulf would be more likely to impact the state’s west coast.’

Of course, these same Republicans have no problem with drilling in Alaska or off-shore drilling in California.

Republicans are infamous for their hypocrisy.

Like the Democrats against the offshore wind turbines. In both cases, it is a step towards Domestic Energy Independence so I support both policies.

Off shore wind turbines drive whales so nuts they die. It's literally torture for them.

First off, thanks for calling it the Gulf of Mexico. Changing the name to the "Gulf of America" was a petty, Trump-like thing to do.

Secondly, it appears that Trump is bound and determined to do another about face and break another promise. DeSantis and Floridians have cause for concern. If I retired and bought a house overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, I certainly wouldn't want to spend my days gazing at an array of oil pumps.

I'm all for energy independence but there are plenty of territories under USA control that are chock-full of oil reserves. Florida is a tourist destination. Millions flock to their beaches to relax or fish off of their shores or surf or hang-glide. Who wants to sit on the beach looking at an industrial apparatus? Who wants their kids to swim into a patch of spilt oil?

Now if the rigs were positioned far enough offshore to be unseen by the naked eye then that may be a different story.

DeSantis needs to tread lightly, though. Else he may earn the new moniker -- "traitor."

Isn't that the location of the Redneck Riviera?

Oil is at $58 per barrel. No one is developing offshore at that price. Its not profitable, by a long shot.
