Trump asks federal agencies to make Return To Office plans

for workers living more than 50 miles from anof office

28 Jan 2025 ~~ By Ayelet Sheffey

  • The Trump administration is moving forward with its mandate to return federal workers to the office.
  • It asked federal agencies to make plans for workers, including those living over 50 miles from an office.
  • The guidance has come amid Donald Trump's efforts to reduce the federal workforce.
President Donald Trump's administration asked federal agencies to implement plans to return federal workers to the office — including making arrangements for those who live too far away for a regular commute.
On Monday, the Office of Personnel Management and the Office of Management and Budget issued new guidance that expanded on an RTO executive order for federal workers originally issued on January 20.
Specifically, the memo asked agencies to "determine permanent worksites" for employees who have been working remotely full time and include "the steps the agency will take to move these employees' duty stations to the most appropriate Federal office based on the employees' duties and job functions."

previously reported that some federal workers were split on the impact of requiring a return to fully in-person work. While some of them said the commute would be a challenge and disrupt family life and childcare needs, others said they were willing to adapt and were appreciative of being employed in the first place.
Along with the RTO mandate, Trump also instituted a hiring freeze on federal workers, and OPM issued a separate memo asking federal agencies to compile lists of workers they could easily fire.

Commentary:
Trump is being to generous offering relocation benefits for employees to sell their little mansion in the hills of Vermont and move you to Northern VA, especially when they bought these mini mansions after they were employed by the Federal gov't.
Taxpayers should deny this perk for Federal employees
Perhaps these people will resign enmass.. That will solve the RTO order and save the gov't a few bucks...
They voluntarily moved out of DC metro area, that’s on them.
They’ made a decision that effectively terminates their employment if they cannot be physically on the job in whatever location their agency stipulates, period.

Must be nice. When I was laid off for months due to government shutdown, I never got to work at home (impossible anyway due to sensitive and proprietary software) and when we were told to return to work, we were expected to be there the very next day.

Government used to scream corruption about no show jobs in the unions. Now it looks like most government jobs are no show jobs. 75% of no show jobs are unnecessary and 80% of the necessary jobs can be done by AI. Start cutting.

LOL....It looks like a mass exodus every morning out of the new subdivisions that sprang-up in my AO when the remote weenies moved out of NOtVA and into my AO.....I hope they enjoy their 60+ mile commute into DC/NOtVA every day.

I guess they thought that the gravy train was never gonna end.....No time for the gaggles of people using the walking trail in the morning. I might see a couple of people now walking in the dark with headlamps on.

I told my G-Grandkids teacher at the daycare (opens a 0600) that there sure are a lot of kids there early now.....Yep, the kids of .gov workers being dropped off earlier now.

I noticed that the traffic in town around 1000 is a lot lighter now too.....Almost pre-covid.

This is absolute insanity. They were allowed to work from home BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC. The Pandemic is over. What the **** gives them the right to permanently avoid the office?

If they foolishly chose to move out of the commuting area where their office is located, THEY have to deal with that reality, not their employer.

This dynamic is going on in the private sector all the time. People who arranged their lives around WFH have had to either get back with the program or quit and find another job.

Why should people who work for the taxpayers have a better deal than anyone else?
