Trump asks federal agencies to make RTO plans for workers living more than 50 miles from an office
A memo asked agencies to provide a justification for providing relocation benefits to employees who live more than 50 miles from worksites.
- The Trump administration is moving forward with its mandate to return federal workers to the office.
- It asked federal agencies to make plans for workers, including those living over 50 miles from an office.
- The guidance has come amid Donald Trump's efforts to reduce the federal workforce.
On Monday, the Office of Personnel Management and the Office of Management and Budget issued new guidance that expanded on an RTO executive order for federal workers originally issued on January 20.
Specifically, the memo asked agencies to "determine permanent worksites" for employees who have been working remotely full time and include "the steps the agency will take to move these employees' duty stations to the most appropriate Federal office based on the employees' duties and job functions."

previously reported that some federal workers were split on the impact of requiring a return to fully in-person work. While some of them said the commute would be a challenge and disrupt family life and childcare needs, others said they were willing to adapt and were appreciative of being employed in the first place.
Along with the RTO mandate, Trump also instituted a hiring freeze on federal workers, and OPM issued a separate memo asking federal agencies to compile lists of workers they could easily fire.
Commentary:
Trump is being to generous offering relocation benefits for employees to sell their little mansion in the hills of Vermont and move you to Northern VA, especially when they bought these mini mansions after they were employed by the Federal gov't.
Taxpayers should deny this perk for Federal employees
Perhaps these people will resign enmass.. That will solve the RTO order and save the gov't a few bucks...
They voluntarily moved out of DC metro area, that’s on them.
They’ made a decision that effectively terminates their employment if they cannot be physically on the job in whatever location their agency stipulates, period.
