There is of course a lot of talk on the news and in the internet about Trump's trade tariffs. But I was wondering, what are the actual tariff rates that other countries put on imported goods made in the U.S. So far, such numbers are hard to find. But I did find out one. It concerns the European Union. According to the World Trade Organization, the the trade-weighted average tariff rate that the EU imposes on imported American goods is 2.7%. That doesn't seem all that bad to me. The website also said value-added tax rate is around 20%. Which they say is about right. But those taxes are levied on imported products as well as domestic products.
Also, I have heard a lot of talk on the news about Trump wanting to have trade negoations with the countries he has slapped tariffs on. If you are going to have such negoations with other countries, I wonder how those other countries are going to handle Trump using made up numbers.
