I feel like such a noob

I only knew of Tool from the MTV Sober video and thought is was a clever first iteration of Zeppelin “Kashmir”

Then Rick Beato is interviewing Danny Carey and I was impressed. I did a deeper dive and they may be the best band of the last 30 years.

I’m probably ignorant about other amazing bands as well

Tool is the smartest band there is. Their music is VERY complicated. Everyone in the band is usually playing in different time signatures from each other, which gives their music an almost swirling effect. If the drummer is in 4/4 time, but the bassist is in 5/4 time, they only snyc up once every 4 measures, which again, gives it a swirling kind of effect.

Danny Carey is without a doubt their most impressive band member. There is a drum cam video of "Pneuma" live where Danny is playing "polyrhythms". At one point he is playing 4 different time signatures on his hands and feet. Most people couldnt tap two different time signatures with just their hands on their lap for more than a few seconds. This ************ is doing it with every limb for like several minutes. It seems like a thing that the human brain shouldnt be capable of doing. How do you separate that shit in your mind?

This is the best Tool song by the way.

Yeah Danny’s a combination of Vinnie Colaiuta and Bonham!

I don't have big musical ears. The way I process, say Frank Zappa or Tool, it's like listening to 3 Beethoven symphonies at the same time

Tool is great. Maynard James Keenan is a musical genius.
A perfect circle is a real good one. Same singer.
Puscifer is another of his bands. They are good too, but tool and APC is way better.

Ive watched master musicians (like pro drummers) react to Tool and they struggle to figure out each members time signature. What makes it even harder is they each will switch to a different time signature before you can figure out what they were doing just seconds before.

I'm just grooving with it.

There's a Zappa song "13" in 13/8, and at the start of the song he told the audience how to count it, 12123 1-2-3-4.

Stuff like that helps enormously
