The Founders, to a man, were all liberals of their day. Willing to allow others their opinion while also able to defend their own. They would be classified as modern day American conservatives now. Their technical designation in modern times is 'classical liberal' or 'libertarian' (small "L").

Perhaps this professor falls within that category?

But not under those terms (and in that sense they were "classic" liberals).

But when the crown would not budge, they became something else.

That would include exhausting all possible means to solve a problem peacefully and as a win-win solution before resorting to anything more extreme. (A concept foreign to modern day liberals/Democrats/leftists by the way.)
