Pre-WW2 and the US wasn't "tough leaders" it was "don't get involved in wars" leaders.
The US has probably been in more wars it didn't have to fight since WW2 than before WW2.
Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan.... among some of those it didn't have to fight but did so because.... I guess people would say "touch leaders", others would say selfish leaders.

Perhaps made all the worse by the fact that neither the GOP nor Democrats seem the slightest bit shocked, alarmed or miffed at his admissions that they might fire or punished the guy as a traitor to his country, yet they impeached Trump over a phone call merely seeking corroboration of Biden's actions in Ukraine that it might possibly hold up aid to the country there a few extra days.
