I am always disturbed by reports of police shootings wherein the officer(s) seemingly fire an excessive number of rounds at suspects. I understand that they have a right to defend themselves, but emptying your weapon at someone who threatens you seems unnecessary and even dangerous to bystanders.

This may be analogous to the addition of a three round burst limiter on M-16 rifles. If you can't hit and disable a target with three rounds, you probably aren't aiming properly in the first place. I wonder if a three round limiter for police handguns might be a worthy idea. These are not automatic weapons, but repeatedly pulling the trigger in high stress situations can have the same effect.

One possibility might be to require that a new cartridge be re-chambered after three shots have been fired. I don't know whether an on/off switch to accomplish this could be fitted to handguns, but it might be useful in some situations. What do you think?

No.
If there is some way you can limit law-brealers to 3 shots, uhm....no.
I say give our LEO as many rounds as they can carry without pulling a little red wagon around with them.
Put me on the "this is a dangerously stupid idea" list.

There are many other examples.

It depends on the situation as to how dangerous it is for bystanders, but the ungodly number of rounds shooting tend to involve multiple officers and suspects in vehicles or barricaded shooters.

Until “180” Police Officers are not executed or murdered each year, I vote no. They dont shoot enough street vermin. Dirty filthy Marxist scum have them unsure what to do getting caught by thugs that have no such restrictions on them.

Tremendously bad idea.

I swear I read this: The police shot the suspect 39 times.

They immediately gave him first aid but unfortunately he died at the scene.

My understanding is that if you drop the gun when they tell you to "DROP THE FUCKING GUN" they tend to shoot less.

Are you high?
If you are asking about intelligence, the answer is yes. If you are asking whether I share your inability to understand and rationally discuss a concept, the answer is no.
