Thousands of elderly people in Britain are left to go blind because of rationing of eye surgery in the National Health Service (NHS), a report revealed on Saturday (April 6).

The Times newspaper said a survey by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCO) found tens of thousands of elderly people are left struggling to see because of an NHS cost-cutting drive that relies on them dying before they can qualify for cataract surgery.

The survey has found that the NHS has ignored instructions to end cataract treatment rationing in defiance of official guidance two years ago.

The RCO said its survey has found 62 per cent of eye units retain policies that require people’s vision to have deteriorated below a certain point before surgery is funded.

I could not possibly care less about the personal motivations my doctor has in becoming a doctor. I find it bewildering that leftists somehow believe "moral purity" in motivations makes a difference in skill. I want the best possible doctor available when I'm sick. And when I think the phrase "best possible person", I do not associate that with the phrase "government employee".

Funny thing about the VA is that it has never provided good service. In fact veterans have died waiting to get treated because government bureaucrats didn't give a shit about them.

Great example of what socialized medicine in the US would be like but it probably would be much worse.

A few years ago I had cancer. I could have got it treated by the VA for free.

If I would have gone to the VA it would have taken well over a year to get the inefficient "no give a shit" system to diagnose and treat and I would have had to take whatever they gave me.

Instead I paid a sizeable deduction on my insurance and had it treated privately. It was treated quickly and efficiently. No cancer today.

I had three "for profit" heath facilities vying for my business and the one I chose was very good. I know you stupid Commie Moon Bats hate it but Capitalism works.

The government sucks. Socialized medicine really sucks. Picture the DMV taking care of your health.

Only a relative handful of people were both in need of health care and weren't receiving it at the time the Obamacare Abomination was conceived of. But the ACA included all kinds of restrictions on everyone- not just the narrow band of people with problems.

I don't think that's necessarily their motivation. I think many, if not most, supporters of socialism are decent people with a strong sense of community. They've accepted the standard liberal line that government is the best way to care for the underprivileged. They haven't really considered the risks of giving government broad control of the economy. They look at countries like Finland or Sweden and think that we could do something similar - without taking into account how diverse and fractured our society has become.
