I can only guess it was to throw Israel a bone after signing the nuclear deal with Iran.

He was granted a conditional parole. He has to stay in the U.S. for 5 years after he is released. If he screws up his parole he will be back in the slammer.

Of course, THAT is the official story. The reality is that he will likely touch down in Tel Aviv, within 12 hours after his release, returning as a conquering hero and the govt of Israel will then give 0bama the finger and laugh once again at the gullibility of the low information voters as well as 0bama's stupidity for thinking they could be trusted.
