Because it is emblematic of what trump was capable of and the kinds of things he'll do again if given the opportunity.
The facts are very straightforward. trump had Cohen put in solitary confinement for refusing to sign a document violating his 1st A right to free speech.
If this was a story about Vladimir Putin jailing a dissenter it would be of little note. But this story is about an American prez having someone jailed because he refused to agree to be silent about that prez.
In an interview via Zoom, Cohen couched his case both in terms of the broader legal issue ā seeking to deter officials from taking unconstitutional actions ā and the more specific aim of clipping Trumpās wings, with the possibility of a second term in office if the Republican nominee wins Novemberās election.
āUnderstanding and knowing Donald Trump, based upon his own words, if there isnāt a significant deterrent factor, he will not stop,ā Cohen said. āIt wonāt stop with just locking people up.ā
He noted Trump had previously suggested that Mark Milley, who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Trump, should be executed for treason.
āIf there is no deterrent factor to somebody who lacks a moral compass, what do you end up with? A monarch? A king? A dictator? A führer?ā Cohen said.
Cohen was held in solitary confinement for 16 days after refusing to sign a form that would have prevented him from speaking to the press or posting on social media. He was released when a federal judge ruled that the government had retaliated against him for his wish to exercise his free speech rights by writing the book and speaking about it.

Judge finds Michael Cohen's return to prison 'retaliatory,' orders his release
"No engagement of any kind with the media, including print, tv, film, books, or any other form of media/news. Prohibition from all social media platforms."
The form said it was intended "to avoid glamorizing or bringing publicity to your status as a sentenced inmate serving a custodial term in the community."
"I've never seen such a clause in 21 years of being a judge and sentencing people," U.S. District Court Judge Alvin Hellerstein said. "How can I take any other inference but that it was retaliatory?"
