This mayor wants to publicize who’s on welfare and where they live

"This mayor wants to publicize who’s on welfare and where they live"

This is typical of the ignorance and stupidity common to most on the right – that needy citizens would refrain from applying for public assistance because they would be 'shamed' in their home communities.

In addition to being hateful and ridiculous, such nonsense also exhibits the wrongheaded perception most on the right have concerning public assistance, where the vast majority who receive public assistance do so for only a short period of time, never to return.

If they only do it in Red States, I think it's a good idea since Republicans are the single largest group at getting the "free stuff".

He's just racist scum, like our governor, trying to push the Somalian refugees from his town and the State.

maybe this mayor should try to get some good jobs in his city..... the average person in his city makes 20k a year, that's about 9.60 an hour, which sucks and is poverty for up here, with the high cost of food all winter being shipped in, and very high heating costs....

This mayor is a moron.

If you receive government assistance in the state of Maine, Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald thinks the public has a right to know about it.

In a Thursday column for the Twin City Times, Macdonald said a bill will be submitted during Maine’s next legislative session“asking that a Web site be created containing the names, addresses, length of time on assistance and the benefits being collected by every individual on the dole.”

He added: “After all, the public has a right to know how its money is being spent.”

Proposals to target welfare recipients and reform assistance programs have become lightning rods for broader discussions on how the poor are treatedand how taxpayer dollars are used.

Kansas lawmakers received both national criticism and praise this summer after approving a law limiting how people in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program can use their benefits. And at least 13 states have some sort of drug testing laws for public public assistance applicants or recipients.

[Kansas bans welfare recipients from seeing movies, going swimming on government’s dime]

Macdonald, a local Republican mayor who is up for reelection in November, can’t submit a state bill himself, so he would need a state lawmaker to back the plan in the legislature.

In his column Thursday, he wrote that Maine has a Web site listing the pension amounts individuals receive — something “taxpayers have a right to know,” he said — and wondered why welfare recipients’ information isn’t also publicly posted.

“The answer: our liberal, progressive legislators and their social-service allies have made them a victimized, protected class,” Macdonald wrote. “It’s none of your business how much of your money they get and spend. Who are you to question it? Just shut up and pay!”

Blaming poor people for being poor. The great American (Republcian Nut Job) way.

If you can't blame poor people for being poor, who do you blame? Who's fault is it when somebody is poor?

It's long past time for shame to come back to the game. The country became great when people had pride and didn't ask for a handout. There is a direct correlation between the decline of our country and the increase in entitlements. Stupid is people who do not recognize this.

Your liberal sites really load you people up on BS, don't they. One more time:

States don't get welfare--people in states get welfare. Most of those people are Democrats.

Your employer is not the government Welfare is not a paycheck. just as the taxpayers have a right to know which government contractors are recieving government payments, it has a right to know anyone else who is recieving checks from the government, especially when they are not rendering any service or product in exchange.

So, you want all people receiving SSI, SSDI, and Medicare to be listed?

Within a society you are going to have poor people. Some people simply aren't ever going to be able to get themselves out of poverty. If everyone got out of poverty then they'd be problems, wouldn't there?

Things are relative. The govt makes things as they are. Some poor people might be able to get out of poverty, but then this would suck others in.

It's long past time for shame to come back to the game. The country became great when people had pride and didn't ask for a handout. There is a direct correlation between the decline of our country and the increase in entitlements. Stupid is people who do not recognize this.

Small and petty is the man lusts for other people's shame.

As I stated, not all my investments did work out. So I tried again and again.

How does me not having children relate to poverty? Because single-parent homes are directly related to poverty. In the black community, 73% of all children born are born out of wedlock.

Therefore unless you are financially secure, having children is a direct path to poverty. And no, it's not societies obligation to raise your family, it's your obligation. And no, it's not societies fault that you opted to have a family you couldn't or could barely support.

This is what I meant by better decisions.

As for working more hours, what's wrong with that? Do you believe that if you don't want to work more hours, government should fill in the gaps because you're too lazy? That seems to be the liberal mantra these days.

See, you must be a younger person. When I was younger, a lot of people worked a lot of hours. This was the norm back then. 50 hours a week? That was almost a vacation for us. Today, it's unheard of. You're an American. You shouldn't be expected to work more than 40 hours.

This entitlement mentality is part of what's causing poverty in our country.
"You're an American. You shouldn't be expected to work more than 40 hours.

OMG. :uhoh3:

OMG?

Then let me ask you: If people did exactly as I did in life, would there be poverty in America today? And if so, by how much?

I'm no genius. What I did in life is not that complicated. Anybody can do what I did. In fact I believe that many here will tell you the exact same thing.

I worked many hours, eventually chose a career that always had demand for employees, saved my money, made investments and now I'm a landlord today. I still work and always will. I haven't taken a vacation since I bought this place, and that's well over 20 years. This place is my part-time job.

Keep it up.
I was dirt poor and quit high school in the tenth grade and went to work.
I then retired at 46 four years ago.
If I can do it anyone can.

Maybe and maybe not. But the point is that I respect effort. Even if somebody doesn't meet your level of success, as long as they try, that's what I respect.

I rent to a couple where neither have much education. He works full-time and she works part-time against her multiple medical conditions. When he gets home from his full-time job, he goes to help his wife to clean offices. They don't come home until after dark.

When he's not doing that, he scraps. He rides through neighborhoods and finds scrap metal and turns it into cash. He often finds reusable items that need minor repair such as lawnmowers, bicycles, furniture that needs minor refinishing and appliances, then he sells them on Craigslist.

They always pay their rent early, both drive new vehicles, and now they are into buying exotic birds. They never seem to take a break. They are always in search of ways to make money.

I have the utmost respect for people like that. When I read or hear of these crybabies that complain there are no opportunities, I look at these tenants of mine and lose all empathy for those complainers.

"You never really lose until you quit trying."
Mike Ditka

Exactly!!!
I wasnt an overnight success by any means.
I worked my ass off and over time I realized that wasnt going to be enough if I really wanted success.
I started dabbling in the market to supplement my income and than I met the wife and she had the same drive I had.
We didnt really hit it until about ten years before I retired and the wife will be done in a few more years and it's off to do what we please.
I credit my wife for a lot of it...ya gotta have a partner in crime so to speak.

That's an excellent story. I myself was in the commodities market for several years. Didn't make a lot of money, but I had a hell of a good time. I might go back into it someday.

It's my experience the people that complain about the success of others never risked their own money in their lives. They solely depend on their employer or government for everything they have and will have in life. Then they complain how employers treat their employees either by how much benefits they offer or pay.

Now there is nothing wrong with that, it's just that I get aggravated when those people act like their employers are somehow obligated to them. Your employer should have to provide healthcare. Your employer should have to provide maternity leave. Your employer should have to pay you an acceptable wage, and so on.

If you don't like how employers treat their employees, do something for yourself. Make investments and work night and day. Don't worry about that I-phone and cable/ internet plan. Save every dime you can possibly save. Maybe someday you won't have to rely on an employer for things you have in life.

The poor need to be shamed so they don't enjoy being poor so much

Only through suffering and humiliation will the poor give up their ways
Was that in the gospel of mark? :2up:

As Jesus once said to a beggar in the street.......Get a job freeloader!

Well that's the difference between the time of Jesus (which you on the left don't understand) and America today.

Back in Jesus's day, if you were born poor, you stayed poor because there were no choices. In a great country like ours, you have all the choices in the world including getting out of poverty.

There are still places like that where you have no choices but to be poor. Those people are trying to get into this country just to have a chance. Poverty in the US is a choice for most people.
I think you are starting to get it

If you are born poor...you stay poor

That is what has happened to our economy. The ladder to success is broken. Jobs in those communities have dried up. Those jobs that are available do not provide job progression
Used to be you could get a nice union job and you could work your way up

Now.....born poor, stay poor

Well if you need a union to make your life, I think you're in pretty bad shape to be honest.

I only worked for a union once in my life and that was many years ago and they didn't do a thing for me.

The only reason for a poor person staying poor is because of all our social programs. There are no promotions on the welfare or food stamp program. Although I will say that HUD now buys and rents homes in suburban areas.

Plenty of jobs in my field of work, it's just that you can't get Americans to take these jobs. Some not only offer training, but they will pay you as you learn. After a year or two of experience, you have the world by the balls. You have good paying jobs and a promising career.

It's just too bad that it's inconvenient for Americans to take the time and do the job.

Hey, your employer and benefactor has your home address, right Sassy! And who are these peoples benefactors? TAXPAYERS, that is who/whom.

My employer has my address. But they have no business posting it for the whole company to see. Likewise, the government already has the addresses of those receiving assistance. They have no business posting it for the rest of the world to see.

Was wondering how long it would take a lefty to say that, lol!

But here is the deal..............your employer is paying your wages. WE the TAXPAYER, are paying their wages; and we are paying them for doing nothing!

And, besides that, if we listen to what the government has said in its reports; when we find out who/whom is on welfare, we have a 50-50 chance of discovering illegals. According to our laws, they are to be deported, yes?!?!?!?! Or, are you telling me you don't want to enforce our laws?

Because the public pays their way, and shame can be a great motivator.

For those capable of feeling shame... Lol

Anyone who does not make enough money should be ashamed.
The losers in life need to be identified so everyone knows who they are

No, no, no, Mr Right. Maybe we nasty, racist, evil conservatives want to offer them a job, did you ever think of that? And if they refuse, then are we allowed to turn them in for defrauding the government according to lefty PC?
