Baseball is my favorite sport. First, I think Baseball interest among the generations is declining. I applaud this woman’s effort to drive interest in baseball among Blacks. When she presents potential root causes and one of them being “lack of access”, I don’t buy that. Inner city football thrives and football has a significant “access” challenge in that like Baseball and Hockey, there are significant individual equipment costs.

The fastest growing segment of baseball participation is among Latin players. Many of them don’t have anywhere near the same “access” as other cultures and the sport is thriving. In Latin cultures, “pickup baseball” games are still popular. In White, Black, or Asian cultures, where do you see pick up baseball anymore?

When I was a kid, we played pickup games all the time. Whoever showed up at the local field, we chose sides and adjusted the rules based on how many kids showed up. We never had nine on each side.
No umpires, no balls and strikes we just called the game on our own.

Today, kids won’t play unless it is organized. Got to have major league style uniforms, umpires, coaches, parents and constant adult supervision. Game ends and you go home to play video games
