It's news because the new administration is not only taking notice of these bizarre and heavily funded projects, it is doing something to stop them. We have been hearing about these crazy expendatures at least sense I was a kid. Each time I read about it, the tone of the piece was "Government! What are you gonna do?"

Trump and Musk are showing us what can be done when voters and the leader they vote for put their minds to it.

We heard about the "Shrimp on a Treadmill" study at least two years ago. With a Democrat or a typical Republican in office, there was little being done about it, other than giving Rand Paul something to show graphics about. Here is the experiment, in case you think "shrimp on a treadmill" is some kind of codeword or sexual slang:

From the accompanying article:

"As far as I know this is the first time that shrimp have been exercised on a treadmill, and it was amazing to see how well they performed," Scholnick told Live Science. "Healthy shrimp ran and swam at treadmill speeds of up to 20 meters per minute [66 feet per minute] for hours with little indication of fatigue."

To further challenge the healthy shrimp, the researchers designed a small backpack made of duct tape to add extra load to the shrimp. With the extra weight and lowered oxygen, they were active for up to an hour.

Sick shrimp, however, had reduced aerobic performance. They also had elevated blood lactate levels. Lactate is produced during exercise as a by-product of metabolizing glucose. Infected shrimp are unable to remove it from their tissues efficiently and therefore could not recover from exercise as well as healthy shrimp.

I suppose the idea is to apply this "data" to human activities? Now, is there anyone on this earth over the age of five, who did not know, or who could not have instantly guessed, that a sick person (or shrimp) cannot run as well as a healthy one?

I heard that the hardest part of that experiment was convincing the shrimp to attach the little cord that stops the treadmill if you fall down.

If they want to do experiments on shrimp, I'd prefer them try to breed shrimp that cling better on a fish hook when the fish is nibbling, or research on the exact time to take shrimp off the grill when they are fully cooked and before they start to get tough.

For those who say that it is "unconstitutional" for Trump to stop spending that Congress authorized, I challenge them to find the words "shrimp on a treadmill" in any congressional budget, CR or funding package.

This poor shrimp looks terrified:

If you watch the video, they make them run very fast for the size of their legs (if they are called legs). Poor dumb animals. They were already bottom dwelling scavengers, but I suppose comfortable with what they were born to be. Then they get plucked up my literal mad scientists and subjected to this.

If they could measure it, I'll bet depression skyrocketed in these test subjects over shrimp allowed to live out their lives. Even if they had been fried, at least that would be a quick death.

Actually, the appropriations bills only indicate how much will be given to each agency, not what the agency should be spending on.

Appropriations were made by Congress to USAID to disperse.

But USAID is part of the Executive branch, and its up to the President to designate whether the money goes to a Zambian Cross Dressing promotion, or some other worthy cause. Or the President can delegate the task of deciding worthy recipients to someone else with his approval

I challenge you to post where in the constitution it gives the president power to stop spending on a budget that has been passed and signed into law.

Every year during the budget fights Rand Paul would tick of a list of dumb shit the .gov was planning on funding.....He was just scoffed at and dismissed.

Thing was it totaled to no more than chump change when compared to the 2.6 billion Stacy Abrhams got to launder and the 2.1 billion that black guy funneled to a Soros .org....That he knew he was going to work for!

WTF!

I challenge to to detail what benefit the American taxpayers see from such bullshit as shrimp on a treadmill.

If you are against the 'Shrimp On The Treadmill' Study then you are against SCIENCE!!!!!! Sacrilege!! :aargh: :aargh: :aargh: :aargh:

First of all, he's only pausing it, to give DOGE time to cut out the most absurd of the spendng.

Second of all:

Article II

Section 1

The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America.

A very broad statement. Any limits on that broad power would have to be spelled out in the Constitution. Many of them are, in fact.

But there is nothing that says the president cannot pause spending. Or eliminate spending for particular projects.

Congress passes a budget (really a CR most of the time) and the president is then in charge of the agencies that spend the money.

Does any budget call for the money to be spent at a certain speed, no matter how wasteful the spending? No.

Does any budget passed by Congress call for Shrimp on a Treadmill animal cruelty so-called "experiments?" No.

Healthy shrimp ran and swam at treadmill speeds of up to 20 meters per minute [66 feet per minute] for hours with little indication of fatigue.

Is that supposed to be surprising? I mean, that is about 3/4th of 1 mph, not an altogether incredible speed for a sea crustacean, and they do that all day long looking for food, so is it really any surprise they did this in a lab? I mean, their entire body is a muscle, that is why we eat them.

Maybe it surprised them. So many of the experiments are to "prove" the blindingly obvious to non-scientists.

First detail the total research that involved the shrimp.

Why would you think this is waste?

Is research on all aspects of our animal diversity a problem?

I ask this since you surely approve the dogie firing of 1000 USDA staff that were working on the bird flu and containing its spread.

I hope you're kidding.

What were 1,000 people doing on that?

I can see a head researcher and a couple of assistants, two laboratory techs, and a scribe/clerk to keep those specialists from having to do a lot of digital paper work.

That seems like a well-staffed research team. A thousand? That is pure padding.
