Armed police rushed to a railway station after reports of multiple people stabbed on a train and a man seen with a large knife.
More than 30 Cambridgeshire Constabulary officers, alongside the British Transport Police, were sent to Huntingdon at 7.39pm on Saturday. Two people were arrested and several people are in hospital.
Witnesses described passengers hiding in the toilets to escape the rampage, with one person saying there was "blood everywhere" and people were getting "stamped" on as they tried to flee.
The attack is understood to have started shortly after the LNER train left Peterborough station.
Prime minister Sir Keir Starmer called the incident “deeply concerning” and thanked the emergency services.
The railway station is closed and all lines are blocked. The A1307 has also been closed on the approach to the town centre.
Cambridgeshire Constabulary said in a statement: "We were called at 7.39pm with reports that multiple people had been stabbed on a train.
"Armed officers attended and the train was stopped at Huntingdon, where two men were arrested. A number of people have been taken to hospital.
There have been no fatalities yet, the force reported.
“We’re conducting urgent enquiries to establish what has happened, and it could take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything further,” Chief Superintendent Chris Casey said.
“At this early stage it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident.”
He added: “Our response is ongoing at the station and will be for some time. Cordons are in place and trains are not currently running through the area, and there are also some road closures.
