The case of former Mayor Joe Ceballos is a perfect example of the complexity of ILLEGAL immigration. Yes, he has resigned and is facing deportation although he has been in the US since he was 4, does not speak Spanish and has by all accounts been a fine American for 50 years.
Yes it IS LEGAL in local jurisdictions for a non US citizen to hold public office. He is loved in the small Republican town of Coldwater and has served 4 terms as their mayor. His Green Card says Permanent Resident so he erroneously thought that made him eligible to vote in national elections. It does not.
I will no doubt piss off many of my fellow Trump supporters by saying this but this man should not have had to resign and should not be deported. He has proven himself as many DACA permanent residents have that they are fine Americans and worthy of official citizenship and certainly should not be deported. In fact, It is DETRIMENTAL to the US to do so and certainly life wrecking for the deportees.
What purpose would be served by deporting this man? He has served his community very well for decades and has no ties to Mexico whatsoever. If the DHS wants to make an example that they "mean business" they have made a very poor choice in singling out Joe Ceballos in my humble opinion. To lump him in with clear immigration fraudsters like many of the Somalians is the worst kind of broad brushing. That little town loses a good man, his life is essentially destroyed and for what purpose? To make a point? I totally disagree with this.
