Actually, Chamberlain made the right call. Going to war before the UK was ready in 1938 would have been a disaster, especially since Germany already had Czechoslovakia surrounded on three sides.

I would say that if Chamberlain screwed up at all, it was in writing a blank check to the Polish Colonel's regime, which he was in no position to assist and couldn't win a war against Germany anyway. Instead of just giving back West Prussia, they lost the whole of Poland, they got a World War they weren't ready for, and at the end of it, the British Empire was gone, and the USSR was in control of 2/3rds of Europe.
