Le Figaro: Pope Leo XIV, who had called on the Kremlin to make a "gesture" for peace in Ukraine, received Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, "foreign minister" of Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, who is closely aligned with the Kremlin's positions. This was the first time since he became head of the Catholic Church last May.

The Pope offered his mediation to the warring parties in mid-May, and the Vatican was considered a possible venue for peace talks, but this idea was rejected by the Kremlin, and negotiations continued in Istanbul.

Metropolitan Anthony reaffirmed that, for Moscow, the Vatican would not be "neutral" ground for peace talks.
