The essence of "democracy" in Western society today is merely this: The People (a majority) must be able to remove and replace a government that it abhors. Mechanisms must be in place to stop oppression of citizens when done in the name of the Sovereign.
When governments create committees of privileged people who call all the shots, choosing those who will be nominated for high office in spite of the wishes of the majority, it may already be too late.
The issue of this age is this: A majority of the population in virtually every Western democracy wants to STOP immigration of third world wretches, usually bringing cultures that are antithetical to the historical culture of the country. And yet our "leaders" facilitate and even encourage this invasion for reasons undisclosed. Could it be to bring in workers to pay for the generous Social Safety Net? If so, the strategy has utterly failed everywhere, as these imports latch onto the very Safety Net that they are supposed to be working to support, adding nothing to the financial security of the receiving country.
And it seems that only a few heads of state thus far have the courage to confront the plague head-on, Donald Trump being "Exhibit A." Pete Poilievre could and should have been his Canadian counterpart, but The People of Canada lost their minds when Trump made a joke about making Canada "the 51st" U.S. State - something that he and his MAGA followers would fight violently because Canada is populated by a majority of Leftists.
Very disappointing.
