It seems many places have put up "penny" signs, explaining how totals will be rounded down or up.

In my experience, thus far, most places have rounded-down. If it's $1.03, they round down to $1.00.

But what if they round-up? You could have an Office Space type scenario with corporations (say Mc Donald's or the 7-11) getting a penny here and a penny there and making a killing over the course of a year.

Why didn't they just decide to make the penny out of something else? It makes no sense.

Anyway, keep collecting pre-1983 pennies, y'all. They were made with mostly copper, and copper is easing up on $6/lb. A copper penny is worth a lot more than 1¢.

I have an appointment with a lady from church to have coffee and help her sort that huge jar of pennies, and give her the melt value of the copper ones. I've been collecting copper pennies for many years.

If there's a way of screwing us over by banning the penny the government will figure it out.

Have not noticed that here
.

One or two stores here have stopped using pennies. I haven't noticed whether they're rounding up or down. Actually don't care because they're people who are good to the community.

We have those here in Flyover Country -- good people.

I used to use penny sorting as therapy. My brother brought home $50 bags of pennies from the bank for those days we were snowed in.

When I told him how much more the copper pennies were worth, he started digging through all the penny dishes on the store counters.

The way it should work is that if the total ends in 0 or 5, do nothing. No pennies are needed.

If it ends in 1 or 2, round down, if it ends in 3 or 4, round up.

Same thing for 6-9. If it ends in 6 or 7, round down. If it ends in 8 or 9, round up to the next 0.

Hell, you got people working registers these days that can't even make change with the amount right in front of them.

I could make change when I was 8 years old! When we used the old school cash registers!

I inherited a penny collection with a ton of wheat pennies and a whole roll of steel pennies from WWII.

Do you watch the market pricing of copper? It's not as exciting as precious metals, but a great investment nonetheless. They sell non-numismatic copper rounds in the coin stores.
