The last one that was around in the first part of the 19th century was about Big (federal) Gummint. But they couldn't make up their minds on slavery, so they joined with Abolition movement and became the Republican Party. Lincoln was a former Whig.

Personally I think they misspelled it and it's a front Wig Party for Donald Rump.
