Trump is viewed by vast numbers of people outside of the GOP as an existential threat to American representative democracy.

Operating under that (well-founded) belief, the gloves come off, and all that can be done within the law IS being done.

And if that includes "dissing" a perceived autocrat-in-the-making, well... small price to pay, to dodge that particular bullet.

Eventually, the media and most people came to feel the same way about Senator Joe McCarthy of Wisconsin back in the 50s.
