In 1274, Kublai Khan sent an expeditionary mission (but an enormous one, to be sure) to assault Kyushu and take the entire nation or learn its capability. As the ships lay at anchor in Hakata Bay, an enormous typhoon struck and sunk most of the fleet. What remained retreated to the home base of the Mongol Empire. In 1281 a much larger invasion fleet was launched by a more-than-a-little-pissed off Kublai Khan to crush the island nation and expand the unbelievably huge empire even further. With the advantage of experienced, highly-trained soldiers well versed in a kind of overwhelming warfare - in terms of number and military technology - the Mongols would have been 1000:1 favorites in Vegas. But again, a storm of unprecedented proportions struck and took a host of the would-be invaders to the bottom of the sea.
